Val Masino

Where the mountain meets the heart.

Val Masino is the first valley on the Rhaetian side of the Alps that you encounter when entering Valtellina from the west. Today, access is made easier thanks to the recent construction of the bypass road, which significantly reduces travel times and invites you to discover a territory of extraordinary natural beauty.

The first stretch of road leading to the valley passes through an unspoiled environment, shaped over centuries by the Masino stream, whose waters carve the landscape with strength and harmony.

This territory, which covers about 115 km² and has fewer than a thousand inhabitants, encompasses a mosaic of secondary valleys: the Spluga Valley on the left side; the Merdarola, Ligoncio, Oro, and Porcellizzo valleys — which all flow into the Bagni di Masino Valley — as well as the Val di Mello Nature Reserve, the Ferro Valley, the Qualido Valley, the Zocca Valley, the Torrone Valley, and the Cameraccio Valley. To the northwest, it borders Novate Mezzola; to the north, Switzerland; and to the northeast, Chiesa in Valmalenco.

The main inhabited centers, characterized by picturesque stone houses, are Cataeggio, Filorera – the starting point to reach Sasso Bisolo and the Preda Rossa Valley – and finally San Martino, the last village in the valley. From here, you can access the famous Val di Mello, a bucolic landscape that enchants in every season, or continue westward to the Bagni di Masino at 1,172 meters elevation, where the road ends.

The Bagni di Masino, known since the 16th century for the healing properties of their thermal waters, became a renowned holiday destination for the Lombard nobility. Legend has it that the hot spring was discovered thanks to a rebellious cow which, instead of drinking from the stream, preferred to climb higher to drink from those waters, producing more milk than the others.

The landscape of Val Masino alternates between rugged, wild views shaped over millennia by glaciers and valleys of extraordinary harmony. Here stand imposing peaks such as Monte Disgrazia, reaching 3,678 meters, and vertical granite walls, a favorite destination for climbing enthusiasts. It was this unique terrain that, in the 1970s, attracted mountaineering pioneers, transforming the valley into an international benchmark for mountain sports.

Connections and Transportation Services

Reaching Val Masino is easy and convenient both by car and by public transport. For those traveling by car, simply take the turnoff for Val Masino at Ardenno-Masino along State Road 38.

Those who prefer to travel by public transport can use the Morbegno–Ardenno–San Martino–Val Masino bus line, with regular departures from Morbegno station. The journey takes about 40 minutes and costs approximately €2-3 per trip.

For visitors coming from Switzerland, the connection is also convenient: from the Saint Moritz–Tirano railway line, continue by train to Morbegno, and then take a bus to the valley.

For those seeking greater convenience, a 24-hour taxi service is available, connecting airports, train stations, and bus lines. Additionally, dedicated transportation is provided for trekking groups, ideal for organized excursions.

Servizi e accoglienza

Despite its small size and intimate atmosphere, Val Masino offers a range of services to satisfy both residents and visitors. In the main centers, such as Cataeggio, Filorera, and San Martino, you can find small grocery stores, bars, traditional restaurants, and accommodation options ranging from family-run hotels to alpine refuges immersed in nature. There are pharmacies, basic medical clinics, and a post office, as well as sports facilities and areas equipped for families. Throughout the year, markets, cultural events, and local festivals are organized to keep local traditions alive. For outdoor enthusiasts, the valley offers equipment rental points, certified alpine guides, and dedicated transportation services for hikers. This network of services helps make Val Masino not only a place to visit but also a place to live comfortably and authentically.

Attractions and Activities in Val Masino

Val Masino is a destination that surprises with the richness of its attractions and the variety of experiences it offers throughout the year, to visitors of all ages and interests.

Among the most precious gems is the Val di Mello, known as the “Little Italian Yosemite,” a protected area since 2009 and today the largest nature reserve in Lombardy. To preserve its pristine beauty, some areas are accessible only to authorized forestry personnel. To reach it, from the village of San Martino you follow a scenic valley-bottom trail that offers unique views in about half an hour’s walk; in summer, a shuttle service is also available. Val di Mello is also the venue for the famous Melloblocco, the most important international bouldering climbing event, held every year on the first weekend of May and attracting enthusiasts from around the world. Among the must-see attractions is the spectacular Durango Waterfall, with its impressive and scenic structure.

Morphologically, the valley is characterized by granite peaks and glacial deposits that provide an ideal setting for climbing. After Filorera, you reach the Sasso Remenno, the largest monolith in Europe: its walls, ranging from 20 to 55 meters high, offer around a hundred climbing routes, making it an iconic destination for athletes. From Filorera also starts an accessible trail for people with disabilities, paved with eco-friendly asphalt and 1.5 km long, leading to the Sasso Remenno campsite, making the experience inclusive for the elderly and children as well.

Heading up towards the Bagni di Masino, you enter an ancient forest of beeches, silver firs, and Norway spruces—an oasis of peace where families can relax in the fresh mountain air. The historic thermal baths, known since the 16th century, still offer rejuvenating wellness moments thanks to the healing properties of their warm waters.

Val Masino is also the stage for prestigious sporting events. The Kima is a high-altitude marathon held on the third Sunday of August, attracting skyrunners from around the world. The route crosses part of the famous Sentiero Roma, connecting most of the valley’s refuges over several days. Alongside the more challenging trails, there are also routes suitable for less experienced hikers, family walks, and trails dedicated to mountain biking.

Beyond sports and nature, the valley offers cultural and gastronomic experiences. Traditional festivals, local fairs, markets, and tastings of Valtellina specialties make every stay an opportunity to fully experience alpine tradition. An ideal destination for families, couples, groups of friends, and solo travelers, Val Masino offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and leisure opportunities. There are also real estate options for sale or rent, ranging from typical stone chalets to apartments with mountain views.
