Val di Mello: the ‘little Yosemite’ in the heart of Valtellina

You don’t need to go all the way to California to find yourself surrounded by imposing granite cliffs, green meadows, waterfalls and lakes nestled in the heart of nature. All this can also be found in Valtellina, in the stunning Val di Mello, often nicknamed the ‘little Italian Yosemite’.

Situated in Val Masino, in the province of Sondrio, Val di Mello is one of the most fascinating natural environments in our region and has been protected as a Nature Reserve since 2009. The reserve covers over 4,500 hectares and features a typically alpine landscape, shaped over millennia by the action of glaciers.

Why is it called ‘Little Yosemite’?

The comparison with the famous Yosemite Valley in the US stems mainly from the topography of the area.

Towering granite cliffs and ridges surround a valley with a distinctive U-shaped glacial profile, through which the River Mello flows. The surrounding landscape features a mix of woods, meadows, waterfalls, boulders and small rural hamlets.

The result is a spectacular setting, yet one that is at the same time extremely simple and natural, where the Alpine landscape still takes centre stage.

A walk that’s accessible to many

One of the most interesting things about the Val di Mello is that you can explore it without having to tackle particularly challenging hikes.

Starting from San Martino Val Masino, you can walk to the entrance to the Nature Reserve and continue along the valley floor, following the stream and passing through meadows and small clusters of mountain huts.

Among the best-known spots along the route are the Laghetto del Qualido, the curious ‘Bidet della Contessa’ and Cascina Piana, one of the valley’s main rural settlements.

Carrying on, you can reach the village of Rasica, whilst more experienced walkers can continue on to far more challenging routes, reaching Alpe Pioda, the Allievi-Bonacossa mountain hut or joining the famous Sentiero Roma trail.

Water, granite and nature

One of the features that make the Val di Mello instantly recognisable is its water.

The stream flows through the valley floor, creating natural pools and small bodies of water, whilst numerous waterfalls cascade down from the side valleys.

The valley is framed by towering granite cliffs, a feature that has made it internationally renowned amongst climbing and bouldering enthusiasts.

The Val di Mello has, in fact, been a key destination for practitioners of these sports for many years and hosts the Melloblocco, an event dedicated to bouldering enthusiasts.

A place to enjoy and respect

The beauty of the Val di Mello is also down to the measures taken to protect it.

Vehicle access to the road leading into the Reserve is limited to a maximum of 40 vehicles per day, subject to prior authorisation. The official website recommends leaving your car in San Martino and walking to the Reserve, a walk of about 25 minutes.

As this is a protected area, it is also important to follow a few simple rules: do not leave litter behind, do not pick protected plants, keep dogs on a lead, and observe the restrictions in force within the Reserve.

Not just Val di Mello

A day out in this area can also be an opportunity to get to know the whole of the Val Masino better.

In fact, the surrounding area is home to other places well known to mountain lovers, such as the Bagni di Masino Forest, Preda Rossa and Sasso Remenno.

It is a part of the province of Sondrio where nature still plays a predominant role and where, just a few kilometres from the Valtellina valley floor, you can find yourself immersed in a completely different environment.

The Valtellina we love to tell you about

The Val di Mello is one of those places that really illustrates why living in or owning a second home in Valtellina means so much more than simply buying a property.

It means having mountains, footpaths, small villages and landscapes like this one at your disposal, to be explored in every season.

And it is precisely this Valtellina – comprising not only the houses but also the surrounding countryside – that we love to share through our blog.
